Well done to everyone who competed in Wednesdays Carraghan race held in magnificent conditions. It was a tad drafty on the top but apart from that spot on. A record equaling entry of 70 started and finished this extremely tough little monster of a course. Great stuff. Many thanks to debut Race Controller Chris Kirk and his excellent helpers for a great job. Thanks also to Manx Utilities and Graham Watson and DEFA for access. (Richie Stevenson)

Murray was out on course taking some great shots - see http://isleofman.in/carraghan2016.

Carraghan Fell Race 2016

The next counter in this years Callin Wild Fell Running League will take place on Wednesday May 11th . The Carraghan Race is the shortest in the Manx Championship being just 4km in distance but is undoubtedly one of the toughest with 300m of ascent on the out and back course.

Well done to everyone who took part in Saturday's James Coulson Fell Race. Conditions were fantastic with the countryside looking quite sensational. Many thanks to all our helpers for making sure we had a smooth running race and to DEFA for access. A huge thanks to all the gang at Glen Roy Farm for wonderful hospitality. John Corlett does a brilliant job for us every year and of course allows access through Ballacowin and Glen Roy Farms. This race means an awful lot to those of us who new James and is a fitting memorial to the big fella. (Richie Stevenson)

Full safety gear is mandatory and random checks will be made.
Minimum age is 18 years on race day.
A good percentage of the route is over private land on Glen Roy and Ballacowin Farms. Access to these sections is only available on race day when they will be clearly flagged.
A large portion of the course from safety control (2) above the Creg Ny Baa to safety control (8) at the wall above Ballacowin Farm is on open fell land and so can be recced. Obviously with the Snaefell Mountain Road being closed until 24th April it will need a bit of planning. You could gain access from Creg Ny Baa, Brandywell Road or Tholt Y Will Road when the road is closed.

Relay event in Lakes open to all MFR members, plus other off-Island races

Sunday 2nd Oct 2016 - Hodgson Brothers relays ( this event is on a Sunday, it is 8 days after the Ultra, and travel back to the Island may be on Monday)

MFR have agreed to pay the entry fees, and subsidise travel and accommodation costs to enter an 8 person team for this prestigious event starting at Patterdale, in the Lakes . The intention would be to hire a camping barn or camp at Sykeside campsite near the event start.

It consists of 4 legs, each comprising a good AM fell race mostly unmarked, roughly similar in distance to the navigation leg of the British relays (except the routes remain the same and are known in advance).

It is open to all runners regardless of ability, who will be paired with another runner of a similar ability. Although a popular event, runners should not rely on following other competitiors and be confident of navigating in low visibilty, and/or willing to recce their leg in advance.

There is a video giving a flavour of the event here, the mass start of the first leg shows how many teams enter this event.

Please contact one of the MFR Committee at Laxey or Carraghan race to express an interest, a decision will be taken in June about entering a team, and a deposit will be payable.

Saturday May 7th Up the Nab. English Championship event, entries need to be submitted asap.

Saturday 4th June - Welsh 1000s. Not for the faint hearted! Four routes to choose from. Further details here: http://www.welsh1000m.org/

Saturday 9th July - Sedburgh Sports. British and English Championship event, entries should be submitted asap.

Saturday 6th August Borrowdale Fell race. This is an English Championship event this year, therefore entries should be submitted asap after 1/6/16.

Further details of all the English events above here. http://www.fellrunner.org.uk/races.php

Please note MFR will pay any member participating in an English or British Championship event £20 towards travel costs. Please contact a Committee member for details.

Bradda Results

Well done to all the competitors in the 2016 Bradda Fell Race. The revised route of last years English Championship course proved equally testing. Conditions were just about perfect apart from it being a bit sloppy underfoot. Fifty two runners signed on which was a bit down on previous races but considering the number of runners injured, ill or competing off island not bad at all. Many thanks to all the helpers for ensuring everything went to plan and to all landowners for access. (Richie Stevenson)
