James Coulson Laxey Fell Race 2018
/The 6th round of the Callin/Wild Manx Fell Running League takes place on Wednesday 23rd May. Start and finish of the James Coulson Laxey Race will be at Glen Ruy Farm with a 7.00pm start. Registration will be from 6.00pm and the minimum age to compete is 18 years on race day. Full safety gear is mandatory and will be checked at registration.
A good part of the 13km course goes over Glen Ruy and Ballacowin Farms and is therefore on private land. Most of these farm sections will be clearly flagged on race day. Please no recce`s over these sections. The route can be inspected from the unnamed summit checkpoint 2 GR. 394826 through to the final checkpoint (8) on the mountain wall above Ballacowin Farm. Access to this section is easiest from Windy Corner.
To get to Glen Ruy Farm go along the Creg Ny Baa back road past Conrhenny Plantation and take the first on the left past 5 ½ Corner (Begoade Rd). Follow the Glen Ruy road to the farm. There will be a sign at the farm entrance. Please be careful on this road as it is very narrow. (Richie Stevenson)

Carraghan Fell Race Results 2018
/An excellent field of 85 runners tackled a misty Carraghan race, all of whom managed to get home, some despite minor route deviations! It was great to see some new faces who braved the less than seasonal conditions nonetheless and record some excellent performances.
Thanks as ever to all the marshals, landowners, timekeepers and helpers for their assistance.

Carraghan Fell Race 2018
/A few reminders for Thursdays Buchanan and Pitts sponsored Carraghan Fell Race, the first short race in this years Callin Wild Manx Fell League. Please do not park near the start and finish area as this will be required for the officials. The Colden car park can be used and also on the road at the side of the reservoir but please park carefully. We would advise as many as possible to car share. Registration is from 6.00pm until 6.45pm at the Colden car park. If you have pre entered you will only have to sign the disclaimer, pay the entry fee of £5 and collect your race number. If you have not pre entered you will have to fill in an entry form. Race starts at 7.00pm. Minimum age 12yo on race day. This race also forms round 2 of the Junior Championship.
At the moment the weather forecast is not too bad but it is not going to be very warm. Please turn up with you full safety gear. A decision as to what has to be carried will be made at registration depending on conditions. The course will be flagged from the start to the top of the plantation which is a compulsory route out and back. Once over the stile runners can take any route to the summit. Any spectators who are planning on taking their dogs to the race please keep them on a lead and within the confines of the plantation. On no account take dogs out on to the open fells as there are many sheep with young lambs in this area. It would be helpful if everyone could recycle old safety pins (Richie Stevenson)
Operation Sea Lion - Civil Defence
/Ian Young from Civil Defence wishes to pass on his thanks to the large MFR contingent who volunteered to pose as casualties during the recent "Operation Sea Lion" at Groudle Glen. The exercise simulated a train derailment and the response from the emergency services - all of it very interesting to observe! Civil Defence have been fantastic supporters of our events, particularly the Manx Mountain Marathon, and it is always pleasing to return the favour when we can.

Slooby Dhoo Fell Race 2018
/The third counter in the 2018 Callin Wild Manx Fell Running league takes place on Saturday 10th March with the inaugural running of the Slooby Dhoo race.
This AS category race is a shortened version of the Ellan Vannin fell race, taking runners from Ballaugh Plantation, through Glen Dhoo reserve before climbing Slieau Curn. Runners then descend south into the valley before tackling what is probably the most daunting climb in Manx fell running - Slieau Freoaghane! This beast of a slope often requires the use of all four limbs as it climbs to the 488m summit.
From this point though it is largely all down hill as you traverse over to Slieau Dhoo and then drop down into the Ballaugh valley once more before returning to the start/finish area.
Registration is from 12:30 at Ballaugh Plantation car park. Minimum age on race day is 16. Any runners under 18 must complete a parental consent form and bring it to the race.
Please car share where possible as parking is limited.
Everyone welcome for a post race refreshment in the Raven afterwards.
Marshals are still required for this race - please get in touch if you are available to help out.
