Winter Hill League 2020 - Sponsored by Aston International

The Aston International sponsored Winter Hill League resumes on Saturday 17th October with a series of 3 challenging but short sub 5km courses.

First race is at Slieau Whallian with registration from 12:15 at St John’s Church Hall (adjacent to St John’s church as shown HERE). Registration will close at 13:15 prompt to allow the officials to make their way to the start area on the Patrick Road. To avoid congestion, the start line will be relocated to that from previous years - a short walk or jog from the grassed area which will be made obvious on the day. Ample parking is available in the car park adjacent to St John’s school or the large car parks adjoining the western side of the old railway line. NB: The Curragh Road is currently closed from Ballacraine to the Civic Amenity Site.

Races are open to anyone aged 12 or over. Any junior runners who have not yet competed in a MFR organised event this year will need to bring a consent form on the day (available HERE). New race numbers will be issued for each race in the series. Bring pins if you can!

Few important points to remember:

1) If you retire from the race for any reason you must inform a marshal and/or report to the finish officials.
2) Race numbers must be worn on the front and visible to the timekeepers at the finish.
3) All head/earphones, including those of the bone conducting type, are not permitted in Manx fell and hill races.
4) New races numbers are issued for each round in the series - please don’t recycle old numbers!

Following on from the Slieau Whallian race, the remaining two races will be at Cringle Plantation on Saturday 7th November and then a new course at Ard Whallan/Colden on Saturday 12th December. There will be a prize presentation after the final race to award cash prizes across all categories (runners must complete all 3 WHL races to qualify). Qualifiers from the short course series of races held in conjunction with the Manx Fell Running League races (i.e. juniors and those having completed the short course races) will also be presented with prizes.

Callin Wild Manx Fell Running League - Provisional Results

logo.png

Provisional results for the Callin Wild sponsored Manx Fell Running league have been drafted and published below. Please let me know in case of any errors or anomalies.

Remember the criteria to qualify was 5 races, including one long, and being a member of a local club. Age categories are determined as of 1st Jan 2020 so if you moved up a category mid-season you’ll be in the more youthful of the two.

Once all looks good I’ll put up the hoody ordering form so we can get them ready for the presentation on Friday 20th November at the British Embassy Room on North Quay, Douglas.

Junior Fell Running Championships (sponsored by Erin Bike Hut)

We are pleased to announce that the 2020 Championships will be hosted by Knockaloe Beg Farm, Kirk Patrick, offering a stunning backdrop and a series of challenging, age appropriate routes. Entry is for children from school years 2 to 7 and must be completed via their school. (If school entry isn’t possible, print off one of the INDIVIDUAL FORMS and bring it on the day). Entries on the day will be accepted but the more that pre-enter via their schools the quicker we can get everyone registered and running.

ALL competitors will need to register on the day between 12.00 and 1.00pm.

There is a strict one way system in force on the narrow lane to the farm, and nobody will be able to leave until registration closes. Anyone arriving after this time will have to park on the road and walk to the farm. Please car share to avoid congestion. Toilets are available on site.

Racing starts at 1:15 in order of school years. In the event of severe weather, an announcement will be made on the MFR Facebook page, website and local radio.

Race distances vary according to school year but will be no more than those shown below. Maps detailing the routes are linked below (routes cover private land with livestock and should not be visited until race day). Note that the courses are fully flagged and marshalled. Years 2-5 will race over increasingly longer courses in the fields adjacent to the registration and car parking area, years 6 & 7 will climb to Corrin’s Folly.

Year 2 Course (900m)
Year 3 Course (940m)
Year 4 Course (1km)

Axnfell 2020 - Race Info & Pre Entry

The final counter in the 2020 Callin Wild sponsored IOM Fell Running League will take place on Saturday 19th of September. The Axnfell is arguably the toughest race on the Manx calendar covering 33kms with a tortuous 1800m of ascent. Start and finish will be at the Axnfell Plantation car park with a start time of 8.00. Registration will be from 7.00 until 7.45. Full safety gear is mandatory for all runners and this will be checked at registration. Minimum age is 18 years on race day.

Everyone planning to take part are advised to recce the course but please do not go on any of the sections that go over private property. These sections will be flagged on race day.Full race details here https://manxfellrunners.org/axnfell

Assuming there is sufficient interest there will be a shorter course for novices over a route that will include the first section of the full course. Minimum age 16.

We have a number of volunteers already but still require help at the following points. If you can help please get in touch as soon as possible.

Slooby Dooby Dhoo & Scrappy Dhoo Fell Race

Next event in the Callin Wild Manx Fell Running League will be the extremely tough Slooby Dooby Dhoo race. The Slooby was originally scheduled to take place in late March but was the first local fell race to be postponed due to the covid lock down. The course covers approximately 10km but includes 750m of ascent including the infamous ascent of Slieau Freoghane.

Start and finish is at the Ballaugh Plantation car park at 13.30 on Saturday 5th September. Registration will be held at Ballamoar Camp Site which is situated on the Ballaugh Glen Road just up from Ballaugh Bridge. Minimum age for the long course is 18 years on race day. Because of the severity of the course all competitors must carry full safety gear.

There will also be a shorter race for novices and juniors. The Scrappy Dhoo will start at 13.35 from the same venue on a roughly 4 km route that will be fully flagged. The minimum age is 12 years on race day. It will be mandatory for all runners in this race to carry a water proof jacket and whistle.

Car parking is again a major issue. There is restricted space at the main plantation park but the area within the plantation that we have been able to access for extra places for the last few years is, at the moment, unavailable. Parking on the Ballaugh Glen Road near the plantation has proven unpopular with the local residents in the past and so we will be restricting this wherever necessary. We are working hard to resolve this problem and will be making an announcement as soon as we can. There is a possibility that we may have to utilise spaces some way from the start and finish area.

Post race food (supplied by Morgan’s Pies) will be available from 3pm at the registration area at Ballamoar Campsite followed a series of fun games open to everyone - rounders and egg throwing! There will also be an exclusive prize for the winner of each race!
