The second round of the Aston International sponsored Winter Hill League will take place on Saturday 13th November at the Cringle Plantation. This race is always one of the most popular in the fell and hill running calendar. It is a testing but enjoyable course with the start and finish situated in a wonderfully picturesque setting. Race distance will be no more than 5km.
Start time is 13.30 with registration from 12.15 until 13.15. Minimum age is 12 years but they must be 13 years by 31st December.
If you pre entered for the first round at Slieau Whallian you will be automatically rolled over to Cringle plus the final round. This includes those who entered but did not run and those who entered on the day. Anyone else can pre-enter via https://manxfellrunners.org/whl2-2021-pre-entry. Entry fee is £5 for seniors, no charge for juniors. New race numbers will be distributed at registration at each round. All age groups start together and safety gear is not required.
Parking is far from plentiful at Cringle. We will have marshals squeezing as many in as possible. Please follow their instructions. If possible car share to relieve matters. We have had excellent cooperation from everyone this last year on this issue so more of the same please.
Dixie is organising a night recce on Thursday evening, meet at 7pm at Cringle reservoir car park (head torch required).
We have had some great news regarding the venue for the final round in December. We have been granted permission to use the facilities at Ardwhallan which means we will have access to the toilets, changing rooms and kitchen. We will also be able to have the league presentation post race in the lecture room. Big thanks to all those behind the scenes who have made this possible.
The 2021 AGM and League Prize Presentation takes place on Friday 26th November, kicking off at 7pm at Douglas Bay Yacht Club.
A buffet will be served on the night with both meat, veggie and vegan options. The subsidised cost per person is £5, payable in cash or by card on the night. So we can have a good idea on numbers food must be pre-booked using the form below.
Here are a few bits of information for competitors planning on running in this coming Saturdays opening round of the Aston International sponsored Winter Hill Running League, especially those making their debuts in the three race series.
Please arrive at registration at the St John`s Church Hall in good time to ensure everyone is booked in by the closing time of 13.15. The hall will be open from 12.15. Entry fee is £5 for seniors, juniors free. Everyone who pre enters for the opening round will not need to enter for the remaining two races as their entry will be rolled over.
As has been posted earlier there is ample car parking at the two car parks on either side of Station Road. They will be sign posted on Saturday. Please do not park on the Patrick Road.
The finish will be at the usual place just inside the plantation entrance on the Patrick Road. The start will be as in 2020. That is just up from the finish on the main track that goes west. We would ask all competitors to congregate in the finish area by 13.20 where they will then be checked on to the start line.
Race numbers must be worn on the chest and all headphones including the bone conducting type are banned from Manx Hill and Fell races.
All categories will start at 13.30 and the course will be challenging but fair. And muddy!
The hoody suppliers need the order in ASAP due to stock levels so the league table will be published at a later date. If you aren’t sure you’ve qualified check the rules and the previous results on the website as I don’t have a list as yet.

The 2021 Wilderness Challenge will start and finish at Ardwhallan on Sunday 19th September.
Entries are now open, so please follow the link below. Sign on will be from 9.00am with the first pair off at 10.00am. Full safety kit is required and in addition, each pair must carry a charged mobile phone, the number for which will be required when you enter.
It will count as a 'Medium Race' if you and your partner can collect 100 points or more from the course. Minimum age on the day is 14, as along as your partner is 21 years or older, and parental consent is in place.
For those that haven't done this event yet, the rules are simple:
You turn up with your partner (you need to stay with your partner throughout the event).
When it's your turn to go, you are given a map and 2.5 hours to visit as many check points as you think you can. (Pairs are set off at regular intervals.) Each check point is worth points, somewhere between 20 and 40 points, and you choose your route.
After 2.5 hours, or sooner, you finish. If you're late, you lose 5 points per minute. If you're over 30 minutes late, it's game over.
The winner is the pair with the most points in the shortest time.
Full mandatory safety kit is required. Map will be provided.
The event involves quick thinking, route choice and navigation. It's great fun
League points are awarded using the usual system, but each member of the pair will get the same.
Please leave the area alone this week, as we will be setting up the course. There are plenty of other hills to run up!
