Aston International Winter Hill League Round 3

The third and final round of the Aston International sponsored Winter Hill League will be held on Saturday 3rd December at Eary Beg plantation, Glen Helen. Start time will be 1.30pm with registration from 12.30pm at the Glen Helen car park.

There will be no online pre entry for this race - new runners should just turn up and complete the form on the day.

Runners are reminded to bring the race numbers they were issued with at either of the previous two rounds. The presentation of awards will be held at the Tynwald Inn, St Johns after the race. Chip baps will be available for all competitors.

Hopefully we will end the league with another bumper entry. So far there have been over 140 individual runners taking part. Dixie has promised a challenging course!

An excellent turnout of 105 runners tackled the revised course through Cringle plantation with Lloyd Taggart claiming a narrow victory over Ben Corkill by just 2 seconds.

Keri Parry took the honours in the ladies category and there were several notable performances amongst the junior categories, headed by Alex Bell and Rhys Owen who both recorded top 10 finishes.

Results in full can be viewed here - RESULTS

Many thanks to all the helpers, timekeepers, Tom Cringle for designing the revised course, DEFA and sponsors Aston International. An extra word of thanks also to Alan Brew and Svetlin Krastev for sacrificing their own races to come to the aid of junior runner Harry Read and escorting him to the finish line. We wish him a speedy recovery.

The next and final round will be held at Glen Helen on Saturday December 3rd, 1.30pm. This will be followed by the presentation at the Tynwald Inn (including chip baps).

Fell Running Taster Session

Any athletes who may fancy a go at the fells but are a bit wary about entering a race are invited to a come and try it session on Saturday 29th October. This session will be open to everyone, inexperienced or not, and will be aimed at explaining what our sport is about in a relaxed and easy manner. Tony and Richie will be leading the session and with around 70 years experience between us we should be able to offer some help! We plan to have an easy trot over a couple of hills and, weather permitting, point out the various summits and race routes we can observe. We will also try and answer any queries on the sport that runners may have.
The plan is to meet at the Brandywell Road near to the junction with the Mountain Road at 9.30am and cover a route over Beinn Y Phott to Carraghan and back. This will take around 1 hour at an easy pace. If the weather forecast is poor we may switch to a lower route so keep a watch on Facebook next Friday 28th. All runners are advised to carry a waterproof top and bottoms. All welcome.

Peter Simpson

It was a shock to hear the sad news that former fell racer Peter Simpson had died peacefully on 29th September at his home in Peel.
Peter was a regular on the fells in the 70`s recording some top results. His proudest moment came in 1978 when he finished top local and third overall in the Manx Mountain Marathon.  A no nonsense runner, Peter was extremely popular and respected by all his rivals. On a personal level I worked with Peter for a number of years when he was a Postman. His other passion in life was sea angling and I and several other Postmen enjoyed many trips out in his boat from Ramsey and then Peel for a days fishing.
Our thoughts are with his family and partner and best friend Cath.
