The opening round of the 2018 Callin Wild sponsored Manx Fell Running League will take place on Saturday 27th January. The Ard Whallan race will start and finish at the Outdoor Pursuits Centre in West Baldwin where registration will be open from 12.15pm. Race will start at 1.30pm and will be over a 12km route that includes 750m of ascent. Full safety gear is mandatory for all competitors and this will be checked at registration. Minimum age for entry is 18 years on race day.

Pre entry is now closed but you can still enter on the day.

There is limited car parking at the Centre plus space at the Colden car park and a few spaces on the West Baldwin road but if parking here please do so with care. We would strongly advise car sharing.

Changing facilities, showers and post race refreshments will be available. The race will be our annual cake race with competitors invited to bring along a home baked treat.

The route has changed slightly from last year and will revert to the same course as 2016 - runners must go through the Cronk Breck gate safety control and then over to Greeba summit.

FULL ROUTE DESCRIPTION AND MAP HERE

We have the option of booking the hostel again this year for anyone who fancies staying the night. Please get in touch if you are interested as we need a few to make it worth proceeding with. It was a good laugh last year. A few beers are optional!

We have had a small response to the request for marshals but we still need the following helpers for race day. Names have to be in by 20th January.

  • Valley manned safety control, 1 helper.
  • Cronk Breck Track manned safety control, 1 helper.
  • Slieau Ruy summit manned safety control, 2 helpers.
  • Finish, 1 helper.

There is no compulsory marshalllng stint to qualify for the league in 2018. We are relying on regular runners to volunteer so that we can cover our marshalling obligations. Contact us if you are able to help out.

St John's Fell Race 2018 Results

Runners take shelter from the bracing wind before the start!

Very nearly a record entry today which was excellent given the conditions! Many thanks to all the marshals who stood out in the wind and rain, helpers, timekeepers and of course the runners who all made it a great start to 2018!

Ben Corkill took the victory, closely tracked by the ever improving and training partner Orran Smith. Tom Cringle claimed 3rd ahead of Nick Colburn with top young cyclists Max Walker and Will Corkill proving themselves equally adept on two feet to round off the top 6.

Alice Forster was the first lady (14th overall) ahead of Eleanor Miklos and Elissa Morris.

The race was also the first round of the inaugural Junior Championships for U13+ categories - separate results for each of the junior categories will be published later.

2018 League Changes

With the start of the 2018 Callin Wild Manx Fell Running League due to commence fairly soon it is timely to announce a new system for the marshalling of our events. A marshal`s chart has been used in previous years but this has now been discontinued. It was becoming more and more difficult to administer the chart given the increasing number of entrants who were required to fulfil their compulsory marshalling stint.

For 2018 it will not be compulsory to marshal a race in order to count for the league. Well before each race we will announce the number of officials required for the race to take place. It is then up to the runners to volunteer to cover a position or provide a suitable volunteer to take their place. We would only expect runners to help for one race unless they wish to cover more. All MFR races are registered with the FRA and in order to receive their full insurance cover we are required to abide by their race rules. Because of this we must have all marshals positions covered well before race day and so there will have to be a closing date for helpers, probably 7 days before race day.  Once the required number of helpers is announced they will be designated on a first come basis.  Failure to find the required number of helpers could mean the cancellation of the race.

The Committee of MFR are hoping that everyone will cooperate in order to be able to run all our races to schedule.

The league format for 2018 will be five races to count of which there must be one short, one medium, one long plus any two others

WHL 2017 - Round 3

Last week`s postponed final round in this year`s Aston International sponsored Winter Hill League will take place this coming Saturday 16th December at Eairy Beg Plantation, Glen Helen. Registration from 12.30pm until 1.15pm at the main car park. Start time will be 1.30pm.

Minimum age for entry is 12 years on race day.

The short 4.5km course will be fully marked. We would, however, advise everyone to turn up early to check out some or all of the route.

Awards for the league will be presented at the Tynwald Inn, St John's as soon as possible after the race.

A few helpers are required on the day. Please get in touch as soon as possible if you are available.

Night Fun Run - Glen Helen/Eairy Beg

Anyone fancy something a bit different? We will be trying out a night fun run event held on Wednesday 13th December at 7pm around the Glen Helen/Eairy Beg WHL course.  The original plan was for a self timed time trial style event around the WHL course but with the postponement of the race on Saturday and issues with the course marking (flags are being continually removed by some probably well meaning but misguided people!) we will run it as a guided fun run to give runners a flavour of running in the dark. If it proves popular then we may look at introducing a bona fide race.

It'll obviously be dark so you'll need a decent headtorch (ideally with spare batteries or a spare torch) and we recommend runners carry a phone also and dress according to the conditions. It may still be frosty at the summit and there is likely to be lying snow so make sure you have suitable footwear.

Turn up at the Glen Helen car park between 6:30 and 7pm, runners will set off from 7pm. The 2.7 miles course can be completed within 30 - 60 mins.

The final round in this year`s Aston International sponsored Winter Hill League takes place on Saturday 9th December at Eairy Beg Plantation, Glen Helen. Registration from 12.30pm until 1.15pm at the main car park. Start time will be 1.30pm. Minimum age for entry is 12 years on race day.

If you have competed in any of the previous 2 rounds you do not need to fill out an entry form but you will need to collect a new race number. If this is your first race then you must complete the entry form. Juniors (< 18) are free, £5 for seniors.

There is a fair amount of car parking available although we would recommend as many as possible to car share. Please do not park on the main road outside the car park.

The short 4.5km course will be fully marked. We would, however, advise everyone to turn up early to check out some or all of the route.

Awards for the league will be presented at the Tynwald Inn, St John`s as soon as possible after the race.
