Ard Whallan 2021 - Info and Entry

The 2021 Callin Wild sponsored Manx Fell League is scheduled to start on Saturday 6th February. The Ardwhallan Fell Race will be based at the Outdoor Pursuit Centre in West Baldwin. Start time is 13.30 with registration in the Centre`s Lecture Room from 12.15 until 13.15. Full safety gear is compulsory to all competitors and this will be checked at registration. Please note that due to a change in FRA rules there is a compulsory requirement for all runners to carry a food ration in all medium races. Minimum age is 18 years but runners of this age must turn 19 by 31/12/21.

A sizeable entry is expected and this may cause car parking problems. If possible please car share and if parking outside the centre do so with great care.

The opening round of the junior championships will be held over a shorter 5km course. This race will also be open to seniors with the aim to encourage newer runners in to the sport. The route will be clearly flagged and marshalled. Due to competitors entering this race being less experienced on the fells it may well have to be postponed if weather conditions are deemed to be too severe. Minimum age is 12 years but runners of this age must turn 13 by 31/12/21. This race will probably start around 5 minutes after the full course race. Short/junior course runners must bring waterproof jacket (not just windproof), waterproof trousers, hat, gloves and whistle.

Hot food and drinks will be available in the lecture room after both races - check the options
HERE.

If anyone is planning on having a look at either course please note that the section through the fields from Ard Whallan is private land and only accessible on race day.

2021 Rule Changes

The FRA have published their handbook and there are a couple of changes that affect our races this year.

1) Emergency food must now be carried on medium as well as long races.

2) As our short courses are under 5k, junior runners for our short course series must be 13 years old by 31/12/21 (i.e have turned 12 in 2020)

3) Junior runners wishing to compete in medium or long races must be 19 years old by the 31/12/21.

4) As well as a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers are required for all races (this has always been the case but is specifically mentioned for juniors, so worth a reminder). As good practice, all runners, including novice and junior runners, should bring a bumbag or rucksack with all kit (full waterproof body cover, hat, gloves, whistle, food, map and compass). However for the flagged routes, a compass and map is not necessary. For short races, the Race Organiser has discretion as to what is carried on the day. However it is your responsibility to come prepared.

New Year's Day Fell Race 2021

The 2021 Manx Fell running season starts with a bang on New Year`s Day when the classic David Cretney sponsored St John`s Fell Race takes place. This short lung buster covers an out and back 5km route to the summit of Slieau Whallian including a cold and wet double trip through the water splash at Mullen- Y -Cloie! Start time is 13.30 with registration from 12.15 until 13.00 at the St John`s FC club House. We expect a big entry. To relieve the pressure on race day there will be an opportunity to collect race numbers on Wednesday 30th December at the Manor Hotel in Willaston from 17.00 until 19.00. Pre entry is now closed as the limit of 300 has been reached. Once you have pre entered all you need to do is register at either session and collect your race number. There may be limited entry on the day. Entry fee is £5 for seniors, £1 for juniors. Minimum age is 12 on the day. All fees will be donated to HBOT, the Hyperbaric Chamber.

The race will start and finish in the Peel and St John`s cricket club field which is adjacent to the football ground. All runners are invited to wear fancy dress but please keep this within reason. Although the race is not a counter in the Callin Wild Manx Fell League it is registered with the UK Fell Runners Association and therefore comes under their rules of competition. If anyone turns up in fancy dress that is over the top they may be stopped from racing. All competitors are strongly advised to carry a water proof jacket especially if the weather conditions are poor.

There will be soup, tea and coffee available in the football club house post race.

Aston International Winter Hill League Round 3

The 3rd and final round of the Aston International sponsored Winter Hill League is scheduled for Saturday 12th December on a new course within the Colden Plantation. Dixie has promised a very interesting route that will be tough but sporting.  Race HQ plus the start and finish will be at the Ard Whallan Outdoor Pursuit Centre in West Baldwin. Minimum age is 12 years on race day.

There will be a night recce of the new course on Wednesday 9th December. Meet at the Colden car park (as used for the Carraghan race) for 7pm. Easy pace & all welcome. Bring a headtorch!

Registration will be from 12.30 until 13.15. We have decided to have an earlier registration on Friday 11th to try and relieve the pressure on race day given we are enjoying such big entries. We trialled this for the recent Cringle race and it proved very helpful to our hard working officials.  So to clarify if you have competed in one or both of the first 2 rounds of the league your entry will automatically be rolled over for the 3rd.  You can register and collect your race number at the Manor Hotel on Friday 11th December from 17.00 until 19.00 or on race day at Ard Whallan from 12.30 until 13.15. Anyone who has not competed so far can enter at either registration.

Post race refreshments will be available in the Ard Whallan lecture room followed by the league presentation. We will also be presenting hoodies to the juniors who successfully competed in the short course races this year. I have been lucky enough to have had a sneak preview of the hoodies and they are good!

More information will be posted over the next couple of weeks.

The hostel has been booked for anyone who wishes to stop overnight. Please get in touch with Rosy Craine as soon as possible if interested.
