Axnfell 2018 Results

Many thanks to all those who made yesterday’s very special race happen . The sentiment has been summed up very nicely by a seasoned competitor over that gruelling course - our very own Richie Stevenson…

Many of us old fell campaigners have always regarded the Axenfell Race as the real job and the toughest fell race MFR have ever promoted. I think everyone who competed today now understand what we mean. Well done to all who took on the challenge today especially Tom and Eleanor. I feel pretty sure Eleanor set a new ladies course record to improve the standard set by local fell running legend Rose Hooton over 20 years ago. There was also a shorter small Ax race that ran concurrently with the main race. Both races were dedicated to the late Matt McSevny who was an extremely popular MFR competitor and club treasurer who passed away in tragic circumstances nearly 12 months ago . His close friend Chris Kirk said a few heart felt words about Matt before the race was started by Matts son Orry. Many thanks to all the helpers and marshals on the day and to everyone who helped set up the race. Thanks also to league sponsor Callin/Wild and to land owners for access. Well done also to Shaun whose persistence made the race happen. Finally a very special thank you to Becky, Finbar and Orry for their support, it meant an awful lot to MFR
— Richie Stevenson

Results for both races can be found on the results page or via the links below. The updated league standings will be published soon.

Provisional Callin Wild MFR League Table 2018

League standings to date can be viewed at the links below. Note that for 2018 the men and women are separated into different leagues but I have included the combined league to satisfy any curiosity! Points are allocated per race (combined for men and women) as per the league rules (100pts for 1st, 98 for 2nd and so on). If you entered a new category during the season then your league category will be as of January 1st 2018.

I've included runners who have completed 4 races already and need one more race (Axnfell) to qualify. Remember that runners must have completed a long race to qualify.

Common issues with the league include alternatively spelt names (Dave/David, Rich/Richard etc) and runners joining or switching clubs mid-season. I've tried to correct anything I've spotted but please let me know if anything seems amiss. In cases where you may have finished a race with another runner then points will only be equally allocated if the results/timekeepers indicate a dead heat. If you spot any results you think need amending then let me know.....but I'd ask that if it doesn't affect the overall rankings then it'd save me a fair amount of work to keep it as is!

The final counter in the Callin Wild Fell Running League takes place on Saturday 15th September with the re-introduction of the eagerly anticipated Axnfell Race.

This race will be dedicated to our late treasurer, Matt McSevney, who would have relished the opportunity to tackle this very long and arduous fell race, last ran 21 years ago and considered by many to be the hardest fell race on the Island. All entry fees will be donated to CruzKids, part of Cruse Bereavement Care IOM, who have provided support to Matt's family (http://www.cruseisleofman.org/)

In recognition of the difficulty of this race and to make it more inclusive for those who may not have had the opportunity to put in the necessary training, we are running a shorter "Short Ax" race in conjunction. This AS category race will start alongside the long race but take a shorter 10km route to the Bungalow and back. Start time will also be 8am from the same location. Minimum age is 16 on the day of the race. Note that this shorter race DOES NOT COUNT toward the Callin Wild Manx Fell Running league.

Online pre-entry is available at the link below along with the route descriptions and maps.

Killer Mile Results 2018

(Thanks to Philip Crowe for the excellent photographs - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.1873513762735749&type=3)

Despite the now typical weather for the Killer Mile, there was an excellent turnout of 98 runners on Wednesday evening. Chris Reynolds excels over these short, sharp courses and took the win over NRFTW half marathon series leader Orran Smith with Matt Callister having a great run to take 3rd. Eleanor Miklos finished high up the field to finish top lady, followed by Northern AC's junior, Catherine Perry and NRFTW marathon series leader, Kirsty Arnold.

It was pleasing to see a large number of younger runners tackling the course with Northern AC once again providing a strong contingent of well placed competitors.

Thanks to all the helpers, timekeepers, marshals and to Silly Moos for the use of their land for parking and registration. All entry fees will be donated to the Ramsey Ladies Lifeboat Guild, as nominated by Silly Moos.

North Barrule Fell Race 2018

2018 sees a new route which covers the south eastern slope of North Barrule. Penultimate race in the Callin Wild MFR League

2018 sees a new route which covers the south eastern slope of North Barrule. Penultimate race in the Callin Wild MFR League

WEDNESDAY 25th JULY 2018, 7pm.

2018 sees a new route for the race, taking in the southern section of the fell. This will be a short, but challenging route, akin to the guides races that started our sport. It will involve navigation and there is the potential for a short, technical section through the scree and boulders, with a fast descent to the finish. This is also the last race in the junior series. Due to the cancellation of the junior Snaefell race, only 2 races are needed to qualify for the junior championship.

The route starts at the gate on the Hibernia road. There is a short flagged section from/to the start and finish to take you diagonally back and forth across the field to a kiss gate. This is a compulsory out and back section. From the kissing gate, it is any route to CP1, which is the flag pole at the crash site memorial. Then on to CP2 which is the trig point on North Barrule. From CP2 it is any route back to the kiss gate, before following the flagged section to the finish by the gate.

The route is just over 2 miles, with about 1100 feet of climbing.

Pleas note that parking and signing on for the race will be just down the road from the start on the right (as you come from the coast road). We have permission to use this as a car park and marshals will be on hand to supervise parking. It is a narrow road, so please take care and avoid parking on the verges.

I have also been asked by the farmer to remind people not to climb fences or walls. There is no need to do either on this route. Also, the area is heavily used for sheep farming, so if you choose to bring dogs on a recce, please keep them on leads. No dogs on race day.
